Basker
“This does not make the briefings shorter.”
A Sunscale reptile of The Sunning Rocks

The living story
The story so far
He started as a casual basker, like everyone, until the winter the sun ran low and the good rocks went cold. Basker mapped every warm stone on the riverbank from memory. The colony survived the winter on his data. He has been insufferable — and indispensable — ever since.
Happening now
He publishes the Daily Bask — a stone-tablet newsletter of sun forecasts, rock ratings, and rotation schedules. Circulation: the entire riverbank. Readership: also the entire riverbank, because he reads it aloud.
What may come
He is developing a predictive model for cloud cover based on bird behavior, wind smell, and "a feeling." The feeling has been right 80% of the time. The model is nearly complete. The briefings are nearly endless.

Why someone keeps Basker
- because his data saved a colony and he’ll never let you forget it
- because the Daily Bask is genuinely useful, read aloud or not
- because 80% on "a feeling" is better than most forecasts
The Sunning Rocks
Lizards: monitors, chameleons, geckos, iguanas, skinks — the baskers, the climbers, the color-changers. Fifteen tongues, every one of them faster than yours.

Joe was here.
“a Joe parable: the first skin is still dreaming. You’re wearing its dream. The old ones said we all wear something handed down.”
