“She is unbothered.”
A Nightbelly reptile of The Sunning Rocks

The living story
The story so far
She lost her first tail to a curious jay at six weeks old and discovered, mid-panic, that she didn’t actually need it. "Turns out," she told the leaf litter, "I’m mostly me without it." Philosophy was born.
Happening now
She now runs the litter’s rapid-response service — anything dropped, lost, or stuck, Gloss retrieves it at speed. Her fee is one compliment about her new tail. Her tails are always new. The compliments never stop.
What may come
She is on her fifth tail, which she has named. She will not say the name. "It’s personal," she says, which is the most attached she’s ever been to a detachable body part.

Why someone keeps Gloss
- because she treats losing her tail like a wardrobe change
- because her rapid-response service runs on compliments

- A blue-tailed streak of "was that—?" Gloss’s electric-blue tail is the brightest thing in the leaf litter, which seems like a terrible survival strategy until you learn the trick: the tail detaches. Predators grab the glow. Gloss keeps the rest. She has done this four times. She grows them back.
