The story so far
Zola appointed herself counter of heads eleven seasons ago, after a foggy morning when two young ones wandered. No one has wandered uncounted since. The appointment was never revoked because it was never needed to be.
Happening now
She has added a new category to roll-call: 'present in spirit,' for the four Unnamed. The troop stands a little straighter for it.
What may come
She is training a successor — young, quick, hopeless at stern looks. Zola is patient. Sternness can be taught. Caring cannot.

“Zola added the category herself: 'present in spirit.' Four names that were never given, counted every morning. The troop stands straighter for it. But here is what the whisper knows: on the morning after she added it, the fog was so thick the count should have been impossible — and Zola counted four present-in-spirit without hesitation, pointing at four empty places in the mist. Her finger did not waver. When asked how she knew where to point, she said: 'They were restless, the way grass is restless before rain.' She was quoting Meron. Or Meron was quoting something older.”
