The living story
The story so far
He earned his first scar before his first year — a catfish spine, a lesson in humility — and he has been collecting both ever since. His hide is a manuscript. Young crocs read him like a book. He encourages this. "Read closely," he says. "I’m expensive."
Happening now
He tells the river’s history at the dry-season gathering: the great flood, the year of the birds, the drought his grandmother survived. His stories are long. Nobody leaves. Leaving would be unthinkable. Staying is better anyway.
What may come
He is training his successor — a young female with "the look," he says, though he won’t say what the look is. The training involves listening. Mostly listening. "The river talks," he tells her. "Your job is to be worth talking to."
