The Deepmother is the mother of the deep — the dark below is hers the way the sky is nobody's — and she came up once, for one Long Dim, stood at the Flats Edge for the whole hour, and went back down. No Delver has ever asked twice; the Undercut simply dug her a straighter tunnel home. Her depth-gauge eyes show fathoms no instrument reaches, and she has seen the bottom of everything.
