The story so far
She dug her burrow when the neighborhood was a field of wild grass, and she has been unimpressed by every development since. California has outlasted the farm, the suburb, and three different mail carriers, and she answers the door for none of them.
Happening now
She is sealed inside her silk-lined burrow with her trapdoor shut, listening to the vibrations of the world above. A dog is barking. A car is passing. None of it is her problem. It has never been her problem.
What may come
She will live for years more in the same hole, molting, waiting, thriving on patience. Long after the current house is remodeled, she will still be underneath it, declining all visitors.
