Balsa

Balsa is the lightest wood in the commerce of nations — so light it floats like a promise — and they have never quite forgiven the world for calling it weak. "Light," they say, "is not the absence of strength. It is strength that learned to travel." In 1947 nine balsa logs lashed together carried the Kon-Tiki across the Pacific, and Balsa keeps the newspaper clipping pressed in bark, though they pretend not to care about human adventures. Their dream is the sea: to be a raft again, to ride the Humboldt current the way their wild cousins ride rivers. The Canopy Throne, obsessed with height, finds them baffling — a tree that wants to go sideways, floating. Balsa only smiles. "You all reach for the sky," they say. "Someone has to remember the water."
