Boojum

Boojum looks like a tree planted upside down, and they have heard every joke. The boojum of Baja — a great inverted carrot of succulent stem, branches like afterthoughts — stores water in its swollen column and wears its absurdity with total dignity. "Yes, I am upside down," they tell the laughing seedlings. "The desert rewards those who think differently. Right-side-up trees are everywhere. How many of them are still funny after a century?" Their shape is a water tower; their patience is geological. The Desert Court, which mints its wealth in stored liters, quietly holds Boojum's reserves among its largest — the joke, it turns out, is a vault. Asked about the Missing Ring, they consider the question from their inverted height and say: "Perhaps that year the world was planted upside down too. It happens to the best of us."
