The story so far
Didier is the bank of the Desert Court, and water is the currency. The Grandidier's baobab — those impossible bottle-trunks along Madagascar's famous avenue — can store thousands of liters in its fibrous wood, a reservoir wearing bark. In the drought year, the court came thirsty: the halfmens with their bowed heads, the quiver trees rattling dry. Didier opened his vault. He gave, and gave, and the court's ledgers marked every liter — because in the desert, generosity is accounting. "Water is wealth," the faction says, "and the stored liter is the coin of the realm." Didier's addendum, delivered as his trunk visibly thinned: "And a bank that never lends is only a wall." When the rains returned, the court repaid him in the only currency he accepts: they planted his seedlings the length of the avenue, a whole new row of vaults for the next drought.
