Suber

Every nine years the harvesters come with their axes, and Suber opens his arms. The cork oak's bark — thick, spongy, fireproof — can be stripped to the living layer without killing the tree, and he gives it freely: wine stoppers, flooring, the bulletin boards of the world. The first stripping stings; by the third, he says, it feels like a haircut. "Take it," he tells the nervous young oaks. "I am not my bark. I am the thing that makes more bark." The Painted Bark faction, which treats surface as identity, finds him philosophically scandalous and secretly adored — the tree who proves identity survives the loss of its surface. His stripped trunk glows russet-red for a season, naked and unbothered, before the new cork silvers over. Generosity, he insists, is just confidence with the bark off.
