Papyra

Papyra carries the mail of three centuries. The paper birch peels its bark in white scrolls — and for a thousand years, humans have written on them: love letters, debts, prayers, the Novgorod birchbark manuscripts that outlasted the cities that wrote them. She keeps every message ever entrusted to her, curled in her peeling layers like a library that sheds. Scholars come to unroll her; lovers come to add theirs. "Paper remembers what people forget," she says, smoothing a fresh scroll. The Painted Bark faction deals in surfaces, but Papyra deals in what surfaces carry — which makes her its conscience. She has one scroll she will not unroll for anyone: a bark letter from the year of the Missing Ring, sealed in lichen. "Some mail," she says, "is addressed to no one living."
