Adenia

Adenia won the Desert Court's beauty trial in the cruelest heat of the year, which is the only time it counts. The desert rose stores water in a great swollen caudex — a belly of a trunk, gnarled and gray — and then, with perfect theatrical timing, erupts in vivid pink-red blooms against the starkness. The court's aesthetes, who judge everything, judged her flawless. "Anyone can flower in spring," she says, arranging her petals. "Flower in a drought and we will talk." Her sap is toxic — the hunters' arrow poison of old Africa — which she mentions the way other trees mention thorns: as a footnote to beauty. Water is wealth here, and Adenia is rich twice over: a vault below, a coronation above. The court's coin, spent entirely on splendor.
