Socratea

Socratea has never taken a step, and the legend walks anyway. The walking palm's stilt roots — a cone of stilts lifting the trunk clear of the forest floor — inspired the famous story: that the tree walks toward the light, roots dying behind and sprouting ahead. The botanists measured for years and delivered their verdict: the trunk stays put. The legend shrugged and kept walking. "I let them have it," they say, the Wanderers' war-captain, amused. "A tree that stays still for three hundred years deserves a good story." The stilt roots are real and marvelous — flood insurance, landslide insurance, a tripod against the falling world. Young Wanderers ask if the legend cheapens the truth. Socratea sways on their stilts. "The truth is I survive. The legend is I travel. Both," they say, "are forms of not dying."
