The story so far
The stems are hollow. The ants moved in. The tree feeds them sweet Müllerian bodies, and the Azteca ants repay the rent by swarming anything that bites the leaves — one of the rainforest's oldest protection rackets, and everybody's happy. Antflute is the Devil's Garden's musician because her body is an instrument: the wind through the hollow stems plays low flute-tones, the ants march in time, and the Garden's anthem practically writes itself. She composes for the colony — every tenant gets a motif. The ants, she insists, are her orchestra, not her guards.
