The redtail catfish wears its warning flag openly — black above, ember below — and then behaves like the friendliest thing in the river. Emberwhisk has never understood the concept of a stranger; there are only friends he hasn't fed yet. He is the Cathedral's volume knob: when he laughs, the drowned forest laughs. Pirarucu tolerates him because even queens need laughter; Encantado adores him because he laughs at everything, including the prince's worst pranks.
