The story so far
The giant armadillo is the largest of its kind and the Amazon's great excavator: its burrows are so vast and numerous that agoutis, tortoises, and dozens of other species move into them — a whole tenancy built on one animal's digging. Burrowlord's commonwealth runs on the same principle. Against Muta's coiled solitary court he offers the opposite politics: armor for everyone, holes for everyone, patience for everyone. The sickle claw could open a caiman; it has only ever opened earth. Backbirth the toad mediates between them, and Burrowlord always yields to a mother — 'the ground,' he says, 'is also a mother, and I am only her tenant.'
