“They say Cannonball — flowers and twenty-five-centimeter fruits growing straight from the trunk — the fall hits like artillery. — and the still water hasn't contradicted them yet.”

Cannonball
“In the Oxbow Mirror they are the faction's ornate, explosive, unapologetic presence: braced stance, fruit-orbs at the belt like ammunition, and absolutely no interest in being subtle.”
A Seed denizen of The Oxbow Mirror
The living story
The story so far
The cannonball tree doesn't bother with branches for its reproduction: great waxy pink-and-cream flowers erupt directly from the trunk — cauliflory — followed by round fruits twenty-five centimeters across that drop like mortar rounds, hitting the forest floor with a crack you can hear for a mile. Nothing in the Amazon is casual about it. Cannonball serves the Oxbow Mirror as its beautiful menace and its punchline: the living artillery the Devil's Garden's Dynamite corps respects professionally, the ornate presence Victoria tolerates because the flowers are, objectively, magnificent. 'Subtlety,' Cannonball told the Mirror's council once, a fruit-orb swaying ominously at their belt, 'is for trees whose fruit doesn't matter.' The council has never raised the issue again.
The Cannonball within
“The cannonball tree — flowers on the trunk, fruit like artillery.”
Bark-armored and braced, waxy pink-and-cream flowers erupting from the chest, fruit-orbs at the belt like ammunition — the Oxbow Mirror's ornate explosive, utterly unapologetic and weirdly chivalrous about warnings.

Whispers about Cannonball
Why someone keeps Cannonball
- The cannonball tree — flowers on the trunk, fruit like artillery.
- Once, one fruit landed silent as moss. The artillery dreams of gentleness.
- Through withholding a drop to protect something small — never by levels or years, only by choices, bonds, and what they cost.
The Oxbow Mirror
Still oxbow lakes cut off from the river — the water doesn't flow, it reflects, and sometimes the reflection is older than the thing. The living turtles tend the Mirror's memory as a sacred duty; Victoria reigns as its uncrowned queen; the giant otter Riverwolf's pack are its rowdy, beloved guards.
