The story so far
The eyespot is a lie that tells the truth: predators strike the tail's false eye, and the real head escapes — deception in service of survival. But the peacock bass's real story is the fry: for weeks after hatching, both parents guard the young, herding them, shielding them, the eyespots watching while the real eyes watch. Peacock is the Whitewater Drift's devoted father — the nursery guardian, the fry-herder, the one the young fish swim to when the current turns strange. His eyespots have never blinked. Neither has he.
