The story so far
The horned frog is the Root-Deep's philosophy made flesh: a mouth wider than the body, an ambush perfected, and then — weeks of absolute stillness, digesting, content. Widegulp has not moved voluntarily since the last age, or so the faction jokes; the truth is he moves exactly as much as contentment requires. Everything in the Root-Deep is either plated, venomous, or pretending to be a leaf — Widegulp is pretending to be a boulder, and doing it better than the boulders. The young bring him their troubles because he listens without interrupting — he literally cannot be hurried — and his advice, when it finally comes, is always the same: 'Wait. Then gulp.' It has never been wrong.
