The great potoo's camouflage is total: by day it is a broken branch, so completely that predators look through it — and the slits in its eyelids mean it watches even while 'asleep.' Stumpghost has made this the Crown's counter-philosophy to Reekwing's fermenting noise: stillness versus sound, watching versus telling. His watchers miss nothing; his silence says everything. Whether he is currently a bird pretending to be a branch or a branch that learned to watch is a question he has never answered, which is the answer.
