The yellow-spotted river turtle carries its identity on its face: every individual wears a unique pattern of yellow spots, a fingerprint no two turtles share, readable at a glance by anyone who learns the language. Sunspot's pattern is the Mirror's most memorized — the little turtle who basks at the edge of Victoria's platter and is welcomed there, who knows every clan member's spots by heart and greets them by pattern. Arribada mothers her personally. Hornshell, surfacing once a century, looked at her spots and said, 'I knew your grandmother's grandmother's spots,' which Sunspot considers the finest compliment ever paid.
