Thud — the giant ape, ten feet at the shoulder in the old stories — walked the earth long before the forest had its current trees. His footprints fossilized in the stone below the canopy. The forest goes quiet over them.
Ochre's cave portrait of Thud is ten feet tall, as it had better be. Pilgrims — young apes, mostly — visit the footprint stones and go quiet. The quiet, the keepers say, is the point.
Vellum has a tooth — maybe his, maybe a cousin's — the size of a fist. She will not say which stories it confirms. 'The teeth,' she says, 'are patient. Be patient.'
