The story so far
The vampire bat is the Night Bloom's great lesson in misunderstood tenderness: the only mammal that lives entirely on blood — yes — but with heat sensors in its nose that find veins without waste, anticoagulant saliva so precise the host rarely wakes, and a social law the faction reveres: bats who fed share blood meals with roost-mates who went hungry, mouth to mouth, keeping the unlucky alive. Veindrinker runs the night's logistics on the same principle — the Night Bloom wakes as the Crown sleeps, and someone has to keep the whole nocturnal economy fed, scheduled, and kind. Guacharo's choir sings; Onenight's court blooms; Veindrinker makes sure everyone ate. 'The night,' she says, nose-leaf trembling, 'is a roost. Nobody goes hungry in my roost.' The young bats adore her. The Crown, which sleeps through all of it, has no idea how lucky it is.
