Patch was the dandy of Victorian England — white as a wedding, nervous as a debutante, bred for the show ring more than the rathole. The fashion moved on and Patch didn't, which is the most Victorian way possible to disappear. The Jack Russell got his fire. The fire never asked permission.
He still grooms himself for an hour every morning and refuses to sit on damp grass, and the pack has quietly started saving him the dry spots. Grit pretends to find this ridiculous. Grit saves him the driest spot of all.
