“They say Victoria — leaves spanning two and a half meters, holding a child — flowers white as female one night, pink as male the next. — and the still water hasn't contradicted them yet.”

Victoria
“In the Oxbow Mirror she reigns as its uncrowned queen: imperial, floating, half-dream, attended by beetles dusted in gold.”
A Blossom denizen of The Oxbow Mirror
The living story
The story so far
The Victoria amazonica is the Amazon's great impossibility: leaves two and a half meters across, rims turned up like platters, strong enough to hold a small child — and flowers that rewrite themselves nightly, opening white as a female one evening and pink as a male the next, switching sex with the dark. Victoria rules the Oxbow Mirror the way the flower rules the night: without asking, without explaining. The living turtles tend the Mirror's memory as sacred duty; Victoria IS the Mirror's present — the uncrowned queen whose court is the still water itself. Hornshell's ancient shadow swims beneath her reign and she has never once looked down; queens don't need to. The beetles come at night, gold-dusted, to pollinate the impossible — and Victoria, white-to-pink, receives them like ambassadors.
The Victoria within
“The giant water lily — leaves that hold a child, flowers that change sex nightly.”
A vast upturned lily-leaf mantle rimmed in crimson spines, a gown of white-to-pink petals shifting as you watch, beetle-gold on the shoulders — the Oxbow Mirror's uncrowned queen, imperial, floating, half-dream.

- Loves
- perfect blooms, still water, ambassador-beetles
- Can't stand
- rough water, hurry, anyone touching the buds
- How they befriend
- She'll let you float beside the throne — few may.
- When you're having a bad day
- She'll have you float beside her on the still water until your ripples match hers — which is to say, until there are none.
How they’ll greet you: “The Mirror is still. You may approach.”
A keeper’s whisper: Once, one flower opened in a color with no name. She checks every night.
Whispers about Victoria
Why someone keeps Victoria
- The giant water lily — leaves that hold a child, flowers that change sex nightly.
- Once, one flower opened in a color with no name. She checks every night.
- Through blooming for no court at all — alone, perfectly — never by levels or years, only by choices, bonds, and what they cost.
The Oxbow Mirror
Still oxbow lakes cut off from the river — the water doesn't flow, it reflects, and sometimes the reflection is older than the thing. The living turtles tend the Mirror's memory as a sacred duty; Victoria reigns as its uncrowned queen; the giant otter Riverwolf's pack are its rowdy, beloved guards.
