Vivi — who un-maps her stones by forgetting — considers Gum's craft its noble opposite. They have debated this at length. Gum maps; Vivi un-maps; both are vital.

“Gum's sap-maps — sticky marks on bark, a cartography of sweetness — now cover eleven trees, with the great emergent underway: a season-long project. Nib directs traffic around the mapping from his shoulder-captaincy: 'Cartography is destiny.' Vivi — who un-maps her stones by forgetting — has begun leaving shiny stones at Gum's map-marks, 'for decoration.' Gum maps around them, incorporating the stones as landmarks. The maps are now part-chart, part-treasure-hoard. The territory has never been sweeter. The cartography has never been stickier.”
