The story so far
Mosi has hummed the same note since he was weaned. His mother hummed it; her mother hummed it. It is older than the troop's name for the river.
Happening now
Infants from the Old World and New World troops are brought to the border at naptime to hear it. Mosi thinks they come for the figs. He shares those too.
What may come
One day his voice will go the way of all voices. The troop is quietly teaching the note to the young ones, just in case.
Whispers about Mosi
“Mosi hums one note while he eats — his mother's note, her mother's before her, older than the troop's name for the river. Mira hums one note at dusk — learned from the river itself, she says. Travelers swear the two notes harmonize. They have never met. Sachi says Mosi's note lives under the oldest Singer melodies. Somewhere up the line, someone hummed the first note. The forest has been harmonizing ever since — with itself, with the river, with something older than both.”
