The living story
The story so far
She hatched with fractal patterns on her back and speed in her legs that made the elders nervous. Ornamental was told, kindly, that she was 'a lot.' She took it as a compliment and has been a lot ever since.
Happening now
She just crossed the entire Court clearing in a blur that three witnesses described three different ways. Ornamental is currently pretending she has been sitting here the whole time.
What may come
Someone faster will hatch one day — it always happens — and Ornamental will spend a week sulking at impossible velocity before challenging them to a race. The Court is already placing bets.
“Once a year Ornamental visits the fossil beds at impossible speed, and once a year the Unspun fall silent as she passes. Permarachne — who survived the end of a world — is the only one who watches her go. Twotail says the silence has a rhythm, like a lasso winding up.”
Ornamental ran across the fossil and something listened.
because she moves like spilled mercury and thinks even faster
because her fractal patterns are the forest's finest unsolved puzzle
because keeping Ornamental feels like keeping lightning that decided to stay
The Tarantula Court
Slow, deliberate, magnificent. The court’s etiquette is elaborate and mostly about not startling anyone. Redknees, sapphires, and one Goliath whose footsteps have a bass line.
