The living story

The story so far

Rook's roar is the New World's dawn — the deep rolling thunder that says the troop is awake, alive, and here. He has led the chorus for twelve seasons, and his voice has only deepened.

Happening now

He invited Pip — Pip! — to drum for the chorus one dawn. The old guard was scandalized. Rook said the chorus needed new thunder. He was right.

What may come

He meets Tumo and Kuba at the fallen emergent each season. He does most of the listening. His roar, the others say, got quieter and wiser.

Whispers about Rook

“Three seconds last week — something deep came out of Basso's kettle-roar, and the whole troop froze. Hush's lullaby lessons are working; Rook's pretend-deafness is working; the roar is getting rounder. 'The roar,' Hush says, 'is just a lullaby sung outward.' The forest remembers when Rook's own voice was young. It remembers what it became. Basso practices louder. The thunder is coming. Everyone can hear it coming except, apparently, Basso.”

The kettle will become thunder.

Why someone keeps Rook

  • because his dawn roar shakes dew off the leaves for a mile
  • because he invited the terrible drummer to play for the chorus — and was right
  • because the loudest voice got quieter and wiser, and that's the whole story

The New World

The monkeys of the Americas: capuchins who can open anything, spider monkeys who never touch the ground if they can help it, howlers whose dawn roar is the forest clearing its throat. New troops, new mischief.
