Hush's lullaby is the canopy's bedtime — the low rolling hum that has closed the day for longer than the young ones have been alive. The Singers fall silent for it, which — from Singers — is the highest honor in the forest.
She is teaching Basso breath control through lullaby lessons. 'The roar,' she tells him, 'is just a lullaby sung outward.' His kettle is getting rounder.
She sang the four Unnamed to sleep, the season before they left — the last lullaby they heard as named-pending young ones. She remembers. She sings it still, some evenings, for the empty branches.
“Hush sings the lullaby some evenings — the one she sang the four to sleep before they left. The Singers join in, softly. And the New World's empty branch, witnesses swear, sways — almost imperceptibly, with no wind. Lena still lowers an extra basket some mornings, out of habit. Nix was on watch that night. He will not say what he saw. The branch sways. There is no wind. Draw your own conclusions; the forest has drawn none.”

“Three seconds last week — something deep came out of Basso's kettle-roar, and the whole troop froze. Hush's lullaby lessons are working; Rook's pretend-deafness is working; the roar is getting rounder. 'The roar,' Hush says, 'is just a lullaby sung outward.' The forest remembers when Rook's own voice was young. It remembers what it became. Basso practices louder. The thunder is coming. Everyone can hear it coming except, apparently, Basso.”
The kettle will become thunder.
“Kavi's oldest story — the one even he calls impossible — says the Oldest's first swing never ended: that every swing since is the same swing, continuing. Hush's lullaby, the keepers note, has the same shape as a swing — out, and back, and out. Kesi — asked once, directly, if she remembers the Oldest's face — went quiet, and changed the subject to figs, and has never been quiet about anything else. The forest keeps swinging. The branch moves with no wind. At dawn, you feel watched kindly. Draw no conclusions. The forest has drawn none. The swing continues.”
The first swing is still happening.
