Kavi's stories go back further than any living memory — the first swing, the naming of the river, the season the stars fell close. He tells them the way the night tells itself: slowly, and all at once.
His newest story is about four young ones who left before their naming day. He tells it without an ending. The young ones demand endings. He refuses. 'Some stories,' he says, 'are still out.'
The keepers of the Fossil Record attend his tellings and take notes. Vellum says his impossible stories match the teeth. Kavi says the teeth match his stories. They have agreed to disagree about the direction.
“Yesterday: 'The rain is deciding.' The day before: 'The old branch holds.' Toba's dawn sentences are the troop's scripture and its puzzle. Kavi — who tells a thousand stories — collects them the way others collect stones, and will not interpret them. 'Interpretation,' he says, 'is for the living. The sentences are for longer than that.' The keepers believe Toba is saving one sentence — the important one. He speaks at dawn. The forest leans in.”
