Unnamed of the Old World

“Zola added a new roll-call category for the four: 'present in spirit.' The troop stands a little straighter for it.”

The living story

The story so far

Four young ones left in the same season, from four troops, before any of them were named. This one left from the Old World — counted at roll-call that morning, gone by the evening count. Zola has never forgiven the fog.

Happening now

Kavi tells the story without an ending. Vivi leaves the brightest stone she owns at the empty branch. The troop carries on, the way troops do, around a shaped absence.

What may come

Meron says they were restless like grass before rain. Bram — shy Bram — says he saw one of them, in the rain, heading high. No one knows which one he saw.

Whispers about Unnamed of the Old World

“Zola counted four troops' young ones at morning roll-call and three at the evening count — no, four missing, one per troop, all unnamed, all gone between counts. Kavi tells it without an ending. Hush sings the lullaby still. Skye sings loudest for the empty branches. And every morning, someone sweeps them clean. No one is assigned. Someone always does it.”

Four left in one season. None were named.

“Zola added the category herself: 'present in spirit.' Four names that were never given, counted every morning. The troop stands straighter for it. But here is what the whisper knows: on the morning after she added it, the fog was so thick the count should have been impossible — and Zola counted four present-in-spirit without hesitation, pointing at four empty places in the mist. Her finger did not waver. When asked how she knew where to point, she said: 'They were restless, the way grass is restless before rain.' She was quoting Meron. Or Meron was quoting something older.”

Present in spirit.

Why someone keeps Unnamed of the Old World

  • because Zola invented a roll-call category just for them: 'present in spirit'
  • because Vivi's brightest stone sits on their empty branch
  • because Bram saw one in the rain, heading high — and won't say which

The Old World

The monkeys of Africa and Asia: baboons with opinions, mandrills wearing the sunrise on their faces, macaques who have learned every human trick worth stealing. Old troops, old grudges, older grooming debts.
