Waldo's mustache — the emperor's great white flourish — is twirled at a rate directly proportional to the depth of his thought. Deep thoughts: constant twirling. He is, therefore, always thinking.
Happening now
He owns three of Sela's unsigned bracelets and twirls his mustache whenever asked where he got them. He will never tell. The twirling intensifies.
What may come
He supervises Zip's spider-silk braiding with twirling approval, and Nib's captaincy with twirling respect. The mustache endorses everything. The mustache is rarely wrong.

“Forty bracelets this season, left unsigned on traveled branches — and Sela spotted only twice, never caught. Half the canopy wears her work without knowing her name. Waldo owns three and twirls his mustache when asked. He will never tell. But here is the whisper's edge: last week, a forty-first bracelet appeared — on the Unnamed's empty branch in the High Canopy. Braided in Sela's style. Sela, asked, went very still, and then kept braiding. Someone is leaving gifts for the nameless. Or something is.”
