Archaeopteryx — the first bird, or the last dinosaur, depending on who is asking. One hundred fifty million years ago she had teeth, claws on her wings, and feathers, all at once: the original draft of flight. Every bird alive is a revision of her. The first edition is priceless.
The Vanished keep her at the head of their table. She is the closest thing the sky has to a memory of the First Feather.
The Vanished ask her about it, gently, and she smiles. The asking is the ritual.
“At the Vanished's table there are six chairs, and one more that no one sits in — not for the dodo, not for the auk, not for any bird that was lost. Archaeopteryx was asked once, gently, who it is for. She smiled the way you smile at a dream you almost remember, and said nothing. The chair stays empty.”
The Vanished keep one chair empty, and it is not for the missing.
“This is how the High King took the throne: he perched across the valley and waited four days, and the old king left to eat. But the older eagles say he was not watching the old king at all — he was staring past the mountains, at something none of them could see. Asked what it was, Aurelian said: 'The beginning. I was looking at the beginning.' He has never elaborated.”

“Before birds had wings, there was a single feather. It fell from a sky that had no birds in it yet, and everything with feathers has grown from it since. It is not kept anywhere. It is not seen. The Vanished remember it the way you remember a dream — which is to say, truly, and without proof. No bird has ever seen it. No bird ever will. If you found it, would you tell anyone?”
