A passenger pigeon named for Martha, the last of her kind, who died in Cincinnati in 1914. Her flocks once darkened the sky for days — billions of birds, the most numerous bird on Earth — and then, in fifty years, none.
She is the Vanished's warning and its promise: never again. The young ones are taught what the sky looked like.
The sky she darkened is still there. The Vanished are keeping the memory sharp.
“At the Vanished's table there are six chairs, and one more that no one sits in — not for the dodo, not for the auk, not for any bird that was lost. Archaeopteryx was asked once, gently, who it is for. She smiled the way you smile at a dream you almost remember, and said nothing. The chair stays empty.”
The Vanished keep one chair empty, and it is not for the missing.
“Martha's flocks were billions; now she is one bird, keeping one memory. She has taken to counting — the chairs at the Vanished's table, the petals the fairywren leaves, the stars. Asked what she is counting toward, she said: 'One. It was always one. Billions of wings, one feather.' The Vanished have stopped asking her to explain.”
Martha counts. The count is always one.
“What the last pair said to each other on the sea cliff in 1852 is written down — the sailors wrote it, oddly, in the margin of the specimen log. The Vanished have the page. They have never read it aloud, not once, in all the years. Martha was asked why. She said: 'Some sentences are not for the air. They are for the keeping.' The page stays sealed.”
