“Word forty-eight arrived last Tuesday. The budgie said it once, clearly, at dawn — a soft, falling sound, like something drifting down through empty air. No human taught it to him. The mockingbird, who knows two hundred songs, went quiet for a full minute, which has never happened. Asked to repeat it, the budgie tilted his head and said: 'Pretty bird.'
