Before birds had wings, there was a single feather. It fell from a sky that had no birds in it yet, and everything with feathers has grown from it since.
Happening now
It is not kept anywhere. It is not seen. The Vanished remember it the way you remember a dream.
What may come
No bird has ever seen it. No bird ever will. The mystery is the point, and the point is never solved.
“The Speaker has been awake for every important thing that ever happened after dark. Asked directly whether she has seen the First Feather, she answered: 'I have never claimed to.' The parliament has debated the sentence for years. The distinction between never seeing and never claiming is, the older owls say, the entire mystery.”
Noctua has never claimed to have seen it. That is the claim.
“Martha's flocks were billions; now she is one bird, keeping one memory. She has taken to counting — the chairs at the Vanished's table, the petals the fairywren leaves, the stars. Asked what she is counting toward, she said: 'One. It was always one. Billions of wings, one feather.' The Vanished have stopped asking her to explain.”
Martha counts. The count is always one.
“She sings two hundred phrases for no audience; it has never been seen by any audience. The Speaker, asked whether the two secrets are the same secret, blinked — rarely, on purpose — and the parliament fell silent. The silence lasted a full minute. No one has asked again. Some questions are answered by not being asked.”
The nightingale and the feather are the sky's two perfect secrets.
Some things are not collected. They are witnessed.
