“Boreas does avalanche drills in his sleep, paws paddling warm air, and Barley brings him a blanket every night like it's a medal. 'It is,' Boreas says in his sleep. Barley has started saluting.”

Before the Saint Bernard, there was Boreas — a wall of dog hauling monks' supplies over Alpine passes and digging travelers out of avalanches with paws like shovels. He never bragged. The snow did his bragging for him. When the Saint Bernard took the job, the world just changed the lettering on the barrel.
Boreas still does avalanche drills in his dreams, paws paddling against warm air. Barley brings him a blanket every night and acts like it's his idea. Boreas accepts the blanket like it's a medal. It is.
This winter there will be a real storm, the kind Boreas was built for, and the whole pack will follow him up the slope to check on the pass. He'll walk point. He'll walk very, very tall.

The St. John’s water dog, the Talbot, the Hawaiian poi dog — real dogs, really gone. The pack keeps their bowls full anyway. Extinction, here, is just a longer walk.
