Barley

“Gentle as snowfall, roughly as large.”

A Frost dog of The Workers

The living story

The story so far

Barley's grandfather found a lost hiker in a blizzard, and Barley has been dining out on the family story ever since. He carries the groceries now instead of the brandy barrel, which is probably for the best, and he's gentle as snowfall and roughly as large. The legend does the rounds every winter. So does Barley, with the shopping bags.

Happening now

He's taken to sitting in the doorway during storms, massive and calm, like a furry sandbag against the world's worries. The kids read books leaning against him. The storm stays outside. This is the job now, and he's excellent at it.

What may come

One winter there will be a real storm, a real lost hiker, and Barley will do what his grandfather did — because it's in the blood, in the barrel, in the bones. The story will get a new chapter. He's been saving room for it.

Why someone keeps Barley

  • because he's gentle as snowfall and roughly as large, the perfect proportions
  • because he sits in doorways during storms like a furry sandbag against the world's worries
  • because his grandfather found a lost hiker and the instinct is still in the blood

The Workers

Collies, shepherds, huskies, mountain dogs — they pull, guard, herd, rescue. They have a union and the union is strong. A Worker without a task will invent one, and the task will involve you.
