The story so far
Ember is not a dog, and she wants that on the record. She is vulpine, clever, and unbothered — she will take your sandwich and your admiration in either order. The chickens have filed complaints. The complaints were delicious.
Happening now
She has worked out the latch on the garden gate. Not broken it — worked it out, the way you would work out a crossword. She opens it, takes one egg, closes it behind her. The family has started leaving the egg out. Ember considers this a negotiation she won.
What may come
Winter is coming and Ember's coat is turning the color of banked coals. She has been caching food in twice as many spots as last year — either a hard winter is coming, or she is planning something.
