The story so far
Pip's ears are satellite dishes on a three-pound body, and he hears everything — including, the desert foxes say, things you only thought. He is the Sahara's smallest fox and its biggest gossip. Adorable is not an accident with Pip; adorable is a survival strategy, deployed with precision.
Happening now
He has befriended a desert jerboa, which is rather like a fox befriending a rumor. They race at dusk. The jerboa wins on turns; Pip wins on straightaways. They have agreed this is fair and will not be discussing it further.
What may come
Pip has started digging his burrow deeper than any fennec on the dune. Either he knows something about the coming season, or he just likes having the deepest burrow. Both are very Pip.
