Gardenia

“Gardenia rebuilds her orb every single night and considers each one her masterpiece, which is correct.”

A Dew weaver of The Orbweavers

The living story

The story so far

Gardenia hatched beneath a rose trellis in a garden that has been loved for forty years. She has rebuilt her orb every night of her adult life, and she will tell you — if you ask, and even if you do not — that tonight's is the best one yet.

Happening now

Tonight's web is nearly done: thirty-seven radii, a perfect spiral, one dewdrop already caught at the hub. She is standing at the center, very still, daring the morning to arrive before she has finished admiring it.

What may come

Every autumn the frost takes her garden, and every spring someone new hatches beneath the roses. Gardenia insists the next one will be her. The garden believes her.

Why someone keeps Gardenia

  • because she rebuilds her masterpiece every single night and still believes tonight's is the best one yet
  • because the classic cross on her back is the garden's oldest good-luck charm, and she wears it for you
  • because keeping Gardenia feels like being chosen by the garden itself

The Orbweavers

The geometers: garden spiders, golden silk-weavers, the spiny and the patient. Every orb is a theorem proved in silk, and every theorem is signed.
