“Sniffer followed a scent three valleys over and came back with a collar so old the name had worn smooth. He gave it to Dune without a word. She has not taken it off since.”
The nose knows what history lost.

Three hundred million scent receptors and the droopiest face in the business. Sniffer has found lost children, escaped convicts, and one very confused wedding ring — all of it with his nose an inch off the ground and his ears sweeping the trail clean. His nose has never been wrong. His stomach has occasionally been optimistic.
Last Tuesday he followed a scent through the woods that made no sense — no animal, no food, just something old and wooden and strange. It ended in a clearing where someone had scratched a riddle into the dirt in careful, deliberate strokes. Sniffer sat and read it with his nose for a long time. He has not told anyone what it said.
The county wants him for one more search — a hiker missing since spring. Sniffer is old for this work. He has already started stretching.
