The living story
The story so far
She hatched the year the volcano last spoke — ash on the wind, fire on the ridge — and the islanders took it as an omen. She has been the omen ever since: sixty years of apex, sixty years of "the island’s dragon is watching." The tourists photograph her. She ignores them. The islanders nod. They understand.
Happening now
She lost the eye to a buffalo in her prime — "a fair fight," she says, "and I ate well after." She lost the claws to time. She kept everything else: the walk, the blink, the garden. Especially the garden. Drogan learned horticulture at her feet. Literally. He sat at her feet.
What may come
She is choosing her successor — not the strongest, she says, but "the one who gardens." The candidates are being evaluated on fern-tending. The island holds its breath. The ferns are thriving. The decision is close.
“The Matriarch claims she basked under the first sun — the actual first one, still deciding how warm to be. Drogan, who respects size above all things, measured her shadow at noon. It was longer than it should have been. He has not mentioned it since.”
because sixty years of apex, and she’s choosing her successor by fern-tending
because "trying too hard" — devastating, accurate, love
because the volcano checks with her first, allegedly, probably, definitely
The Primeval
Four older than the registry itself — the tuatara, the matriarch, the ghost, the abyssal. Never seen shedding. A seasonal rite: only three of each may ever exist.

Personality
Drogan’s great-grandsire, and the dragon the island’s legends are about. The Matriarch is sixty years old — ancient for a Komodo — blind in one eye, missing two claws, and still the undisputed queen of the crater.
