The living story
The story so far
Loyal the way mountains are loyal — completely, and without discussion. Suki's great-grandmother waited at the station every day in the famous story, and the family still tells it at dinner. Suki pretends not to listen. She listens. The story is the family heirloom and she is its keeper.
Happening now
The father of the house works late now, and Suki has taken up station by the front window from six until his headlights appear — however late, whatever weather. She doesn't whine. She waits. Waiting is the family business.
What may come
One day the waiting will end the way all waiting ends, and Suki will still be at the window for a while, out of habit, out of loyalty. And then she'll choose a new person to wait for. Mountains don't stop being mountains.
