“A wooden figure was seen at the old campfire, the Lost say — faceless, patient, tending flames that were lit before any of them were born. Voyager swears it waved. Nobody believes Voyager. Voyager doesn't care.”
The keeper tends every fire.

“The labs still carry his shoulders.”
A Tide dog of The Lost
4 known connections · an open question
Voyager pulled nets out of the North Atlantic in water so cold it had opinions. When the fishermen finally sailed for England, he went with them — and the retrievers were born from his shadow. His own breed didn't survive the tax men of Newfoundland, but every lab fetching a stick in July is finishing his errand.
He still tests the tide at dawn, standing in the shallows like he's checking on old colleagues. Maple shadows him and has no idea why she does it. He has never told her. He will never have to.
One autumn the tide will bring him something he dropped over a century ago — a rope toy, a glove, a piece of a net. He'll hold it very gently and say, 'Mine.' And the whole universe will understand retirement.

The St. John’s water dog, the Talbot, the Hawaiian poi dog — real dogs, really gone. The pack keeps their bowls full anyway. Extinction, here, is just a longer walk.
