The story so far
Xiphactinus audax — 'audacious' — earned the name: an eighteen-foot tarpon-relative with a bulldog jaw, and one immortal fossil preserving its last meal whole, a six-foot fish swallowed in a single gulp. Bulldog tells the story at every mess. In the Undertow he runs the Iron Tide's mess hall: the portions are enormous, the stories are enormous, and the young ones get the biggest portions and the starring roles in the retellings. He has never once mentioned that the famous fossil fish was probably already dead. Some legends don't need footnotes.
