The story so far
Of Mount Zhang'e: one leg, red markings, green body, a cry like its own name — and wherever it lands, fire follows. The Classic lists it under omens, which is the ancient way of saying nobody wants to see it twice. It does not start the fires. It just knows. That is worse, somehow.
Happening now
It is circling a dry mountainside right now, crying its own name, while the villagers below pack their valuables and say a prayer. The fire hasn't started. The bird is never wrong about the timing.
What may come
One day it will land somewhere and no fire will follow — the first false omen in the history of the Classic — and the Bifang will stand on its one leg in the unburned grass, as surprised as everyone else. The villagers will throw a festival. The bird will be the guest of honor. It will hate that.
