The story so far
The Flood Gibbon of Mount Zhaoyao: four-eared, long-armed, and its cry — so the Classic says — means a great flood is coming. It does not cause the flood. It is simply the only one honest enough to announce it. Villages downstream have learned to pack when the gibbon sings.
Happening now
It is singing right now, high in the Zhaoyao canopy, while the villages below pack their boats and their grandmothers. The river is already rising. The gibbon told them first.
What may come
One day it will sing and no flood will come — the river staying low, the skies staying clear — and the villages will unpack, laughing, and the gibbon will sit in the canopy, confused and relieved in equal measure. False alarms, it will learn, are also a kind of mercy.
