“A fiddle was heard from the far fence line at midnight — one low tune, played once, then gone. Willow insists the coyotes left because of her patrol. The humming, she insists, is unrelated.”
Follow the music, not the patrol.

“It's just her face.”

Willow patrols all night and sleeps all day in the sunniest spot she can find, which she considers earned. The coyotes have a map with her territory marked on it — the map is just her face. She is white as the snow she vanishes into, and the flock has never lost a lamb on her watch. Not one. Ever.
A young coyote tested the boundary last week. Willow stood up, all hundred pounds of her, and the coyote reconsidered its entire life path. No contact was made. None was needed. The map has been updated.
Willow will patrol until she can't, and then she'll patrol anyway, slower, whiter, somehow more certain. Guardians don't retire. They just become part of the landscape, like snow, like the map.

Collies, shepherds, huskies, mountain dogs — they pull, guard, herd, rescue. They have a union and the union is strong. A Worker without a task will invent one, and the task will involve you.
